E3: Kinect

Hey out there people, it’s been awhile since I posted but I’m doing my share to cover E3 this year. What you may already know is that I am strictly a Sony and PS3 guy, but the Xbox 360 project Natal caught my attention. Now appropriately named Kinect, the hands free interface and gaming device look and sound pretty sleek. During the presentation for the future of Xbox this year it was shown to not only allow you to control the Xbox through motion and body movement, but with your voice as well. By addressing the Xbox and saying a following command you can do a variety of different actions such as: pausing and playing music, answering trivia, and even chatting with Windows users and Xbox users via video chat. The Kinect even showed that it could adjust the camera to track a person as they attempt to move out of the shot. Of course, something with this much control over entertainment, it must have games. The Kinect features 15 games available at launch, seven of which have been displayed for our observation. First off is Kinectimals. Essentially the game focuses on interacting with a virtual animal that responds to your voice and movement. It was even shown to react when you leave the room. Next is Kinect sports. Much like Wii sports, connect sports features a variety of games to keep your movement up and your reflexes sharp (its slightly concerning how ridiculously similar to Wii Sports). Third is Kinect Adventures. Much like a reaction and reflex games, Kinect Adventures has you move to dodge objects, jump to collect coins, and even takes real world pictures and will automatically upload them to Facebook for you. Fourth is Kinect Joy Ride. To put it simply, the game is an average kart racer that can be controlled with just your hands. Fifth is titled Dance Central. A dance game where you actually dance? No way?! Yes, Dance Central by Harmonix is a dancing game where you match on screen commands to physically copy the moves to music. As semi-difficult as it sounds for the majority of the geek community who are just a little hesitant, they have a mode called “Break it Down” where moves are practiced and explained. Next Forza Motorsport. With stunning HD along with controller free driving, it looks fun. Also you are able to physically walk around your car and observe the various stats and car parts and even open the door and sit in the car. Finally, there is Your Shape by Ubisoft. Essentially a work out and fitness game, Your Shape is designed to follow your entire body and get you moving with ease. Now with all these games and all of this insane ability, my question is how much will it cost? Well either way it may be the deciding factor of whether or not I finally get an Xbox. Lets fatten our wallets and be ready and willing for this next gaming season.

E3: Scott Pilgrim vs. Artificial Continuum
Many of you may have heard of a new-ish movie coming out called Scott Pilgrim vs The World (Starring Michael Cera). If you haven't actually researched what this series is, however, then you are deprived of what is (In my opinion) one of the greatest comic series' ever. I'm no expert, but Scott Pilgrim and his Semi-Charmed Life took me by surprise when I read the comics themselves. The series is good. REALLY GOOD. So good, in fact, that it actually made me get off my lazy ass and do something about the fact that I am currently single (Go figure).
Enough about that! No more rambling, I promise.
Well, a trailer just came out for the video game adaptation of said series, and needless to say, I was all over that shit. The trailer is abnormally long, and probably doesn't need to be nearly 2 minutes, but hey, more gamemplay for us, right?
Sorry alls, apparently video posting for me is next to impossible. Check out the link above to see the footage of said awesome fighting game. The gameplay appears to be reminiscent of River City Ransom, with a tad bit of cartoonish antics thrown in for good measure. So far, there are two playable characters which include Scott himself, and the drummer for Scott's band, Kim Pines. It appears that both characters have the same basic movesets, but will most likely have different special moves to clear areas quickly.
The game progresses in a stage style, going from area to area to defeat the next evil boyfriend. This is speculation, but based upon the series, that's not all we'll be facing. If this were completely true, we're to expect around 7 stages (considering there's 7 evil ex-boyfriends of Ramona's you've gotta take down), but I'd say there's going to be QUITE a bit more than that. Stay tuned to find out. Who knows? Maybe E3 will give us a hint or two on this sleeper hit!
Until next time people,
~Alec
P.S.- For those of you who haven't read the series, it kicks copious amounts of ass. Go read it. Now.
New The Old Republic Info
After their play-through, Gamespot has confirmed that both Twi'lek and Chiss are playable races. Also, the trooper class seems to now rely on an ammo system.
Hopefully, these small tidbits will whet the fan's appetites for the upcoming week of TOR announcements in E3.
Star Wars-The Force Unleashed II Trailer

This is why you don't leave a Jedi (Sith? Jedi? still deciding?) in a room with about 8 stormtroopers. People will be dying. I know he's chained down, but come on Vader!
One thing's for certain, this guy kicks ass.
E3: Best Trailers of All Time
Although often filled with panels, interviews, and developer walkthroughs ultimatley what defines and E3 conference are its trailers. Exciting cinematic representations of video games to come, E3 trailers have risen to legendary status and have caused countless numbers of nerds to scream in victory. Here is the shortlist of what I regard to be the top 5 best E3 trailers of all time.
5. Spore-E3 2006
This zany and creative glimpse of the evolutionary epic Spore was easily one of the most fun trailers of E3 2006. Although Spore was ultimatley a disappointment, this trailer offered an interesting glimpse of portions of the game that were never to be fully realized ,including the underwater stage. Also, the subtle similarity to Futurama adds to the spectacle.
4. Halo 3-E3 2006
The first glimpse that Halo fans would get of the game that would end the trilogy. This E3 2006 teaser trailer is beautifully animated, visually poignant, and of course wonderfully orchestrated.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess-E3 2005
Although not the first glimpse fans would have of a new Zelda game, it would become the best piece of information that Nintendo fans would have of this mysterious game for over a year. If anything, this trailer has reached immortality due to a hugely dedicated fanbase.
2. Super Smash Bros. Brawl-E3 2006
Easily the highlight of E3 2006, this surprise trailer for the third Super Smash Bros. shocked the entire video game community. Not only is it energetic and alot of fun, but it includes one of the best surprise announcements in video game history.
1. Star Wars: The Old Republic-E3 2009
There are few trailers that reach the level of visual excitement that Bioware's glimpse at The Old Republic offers. Not only the best trailer from last year's E3, it is often considered the best moment out of the entire expo. This cinematic glimpse at a lost age of the Galactic Republic is so renowned that it has won numerous rewards and has even inspired its own sequel at this years E3. That's right a sequel for a trailer.
5. Spore-E3 2006
This zany and creative glimpse of the evolutionary epic Spore was easily one of the most fun trailers of E3 2006. E3 Rumor: Bioware To Reveal Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3?
UPDATE: EA has come out to say that these rumors are completely false, and that we will not see Mass Effect 3 or Dragon Age 2 at this year's E3.
A rumor has begun to circulate the web saying that two of Bioware's major franchises will have their next installments showcased at this years E3. The report stems back to an interactive showcase map that Gamespot.com posted for the different developers. Both games were listed under EA's showcase schedule, however no announcement has been made by other sites or by the studios involved.
While it is certainly reasonable to expect a glimpse for Dragon Age 2, which will supposedly be released early next year, it seems strange to get a glimpse at Mass Effect 3 this early into development. Lead designer Casey Hudson even claimed last month that fans will have to wait several more months before the first details regarding the sequel are released.
I guess RPG fans will just have to wait and see if this rumor proves to be true or not.
E3 Announcement and Old Republic News
Any self respecting nerd knows that this week is a huge event. That's right the Electronic Entertainment Expo opens its doors to the world this week for its 2010 edition. And Artificial Continuum will be keeping you posted on all the announcements as they break. That's right, I've drafted my numerous, and mostly inoperative, staff members to help me cope with such a massive event. Now, Gormy will be covering the majority of the news regarding Bioware's The Old Republic MMO, but I decided to whet your appetites with these teasers provided by Gamespot, Gametrailers, and Attack of the Show.

The A-Team-Review
Summer is a time for fun films. Although there are the occasional serious blockbusters such as District 9 or The Dark Knight, the summer movie season is dominated by movies where people can escape the heat and enjoy themselves. When it comes to pure, and sometimes, brainless escapism there are few films as successful as The A-Team. Although far from a perfect film, The A-Team has succeeded to a greater degree then any other film this year in delivering what it promises.
The A-Team follows the crack military team of Lt. Hannibal Smith (Liam Neeson), Lt Templeton 'Faceman' Peck (Bradly Cooper), B.A. Baracas (Quinton Jackson), and Captain Murdock (Sharlto Copley) as they struggle to clear their name of a crime they did not commit. As the team of misfit and ingenious rebels battles its way across the globe they must deal with government turncoats, an elaborate theft, and Peck's ex-girlfriend and high ranking military official Charisa Sossa (Jessica Biel).
The ensemble cast goes a long way to providing for the level of fun that The A-Team accomplishes. While actors such as Jessica Biel and Brian Bloom as the CIA agent Pike are competent, the real focus is on the team through which the movie gets its title. Liam Neeson, admittedly the most serious of the crew, has undeniable chemistry with the entire cast. His leadership feels genuine and ,like the brilliant action set pieces, he is fun to watch. Bradly Cooper is also a standout as the egotistical Peck. However, the real the star in this film is the horribly underused Sharlto Copley. Copley is brilliant and hysterical as the insane Murdock. Copley is a scene stealer and you only wish they had spent more time on him. The only performance that feels disappointing is Quinton Jackson as B.A. Although Jackson does have some fun scenes, he just feels the least interesting out of the entire crew. This is a stark contrast to the original A-Team where B.A., played by Mr. T., was the true scene stealer of the series.
The script is a soup of clever pacing, fun set pieces, and moments of sheer stupidity. Surprisingly, it all works. Director Joe Carnahan manages to pull the scripts weaker segments and create them into moments of enjoyment. Scenes that would seem ridiculous in any other hands are played for laughs. Like the television series it is based off, The A-Team thrives off being over the top. The characters, humor, and most importantly the action are all injected with so much energy and lack of realism that it becomes a literal cartoon on screen. Unfortunately, some of the character stories, especially a rather corny segment following B.A.'s struggles with morality, feel tacked on and unnatural. Certain jokes, including an annoying reference to the Call of Duty franchise, are also annoying and fall flat.
Outside of the actors, the real star of The A-Team are the ridiculous and clever action scenes. From the very beginning of the film, bodies are flying and explosions are bursting. However, it never becomes tiresome. Whether its an airborne duel between helicopters, a chase through the high rises of Germany, or a midair battle between a predator drone and a tank, The A-Team's action is not only exciting, but a whole lot of fun.
When it comes to popcorn movies, you are likely to find few better this summer then The A-Team. Despite its flaws, it is certainly the most fun you will have at a theater this year.
Score: B+
Titans To Clash Again
Although the Clash of the Titans remake, which was released this spring, was critically slammed, it did surprisingly well at the worldwide box office, pulling in over $400 million in world wide revenue. Even before release there were rumors of a second film in the Greek mythology based franchise, now with success of the first apparent plans are moving forward.
The LA Times reported yesterday that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have begun talks to find potential directors. Among those mentioned is horror-action director Jonathon Liebesman, who worked on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies as well as the upcoming alien invasion epic Battle: Los Angeles. Liebesman is also creating an adaptation of the Greek epic poem the Odyssey for the same studio.
If Liebesman is chosen the sequel could begin shooting as early as January of next year. The sudden shift in production schedule is reportedly to keep star Sam Worthington on board. Worthington is also obligated to begin work on James Cameron's untitled Avatar sequel, which is to begin production sometime next year.
Its like Scribblenauts, but its Super.

So there's this new game coming out called Super Scribblenauts. If you haven't played the original, its a puzzle-ish, platform-ish, action-ish game for the DS, where anything you write comes to life. Like for instance, say you wanted to stop a sailor from crashing into an iceberg (or a plane from crashing into an island (LOST) ) You could maybe just put a kraken in the water and scare the crap out of the caption. (Or a giant mystical dragon being, your pick). But wouldn't it be more fun to fly over to the iceberg on a pterodactyl with a lightsaber and break the iceberg? The answer is yes. That is Scribblenauts. Over 200 levels of imaginative puzzly goodness. Now here comes Super Scribblenauts. Now what could you add to the genius that is Scribblenauts? Adjectives. Just think about it. Surfing zombie velociraptor jedi. I'll let this video explain the rest.
