Deadpool has become quiet the star as of late. Taking the spotlight of numerous Marvel comic series and video games, the Merc with a Mouth has jumped into become one of the companies most profitable characters.

However, it appears that the long awaited movie adaptation of Deadpool may have stalled in produciton permanently. According to WorstPreviews, the highly anticipated action comedy may have hit a major road block in production. Its star Ryan Reynolds has been signed on to the project since playing the title character in last summers X-men Origins: Wolverine. However, Reynolds is also playing the title role in next summers upcoming adaptation of the DC comics series Green Lantern released through Warner Bros. Today, Robert Liefeld, creator of Deadpool, announced that WB has grown hesitant on allowing Reynolds to play both characters, a decision that has never proven an issue until now. As reported back in June, Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Predators) was approached by Marvel and 20th Century Fox on directing the movie adaptation of the comedic mercenary Deadpool, who will be played by Ryan Reynolds.

Rodriguez let slip today to MTV that he was recently sent the early draft of the Deadpool script, written by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The studio heads had apparently taken notice of the director following his finished work on Predators. However, Rodriguez insists that even with the studio's increased interest with him taking the role that he is still tied down with other projects including the fourth Spy Kids film and a possible Sin City sequel.

Regardless of whether he will end up directing, Rodriguez is incredibly positive about the direction the film is taking at the moment. The director claimed that the current treatment for the Merc with a Mouth was "really good". He also confirmed that Deadpool will in fact break the fourth wall and speak to the audience repeatedly throughout the movie. Rodriguez was also supportive of Ryan Reynolds, who helped to draft the script, role in the production.

If there is a Marvel character that has stolen the spotlight in recent years, it's Deadpool. The smart mouthed fourth wall breaking mercenary has jumped into public status after he was publicly raped in 2009's X-men Origins: Wolverine. Whether out of sympathy or smart marketing, Deadpool has invaded almost every major title and event in Marvel comics and spawned numerous solo series. Unsurprisingly, Deadpool has been slated for a film production since last summer.

Ryan Reynolds, who played the character in Wolverine, is slated to reprise his role. However, Marvel has insisted that this new film will not be tied to Reynold's previous appearance as the character. Zombieland writers Reese and Paul Wernick have also signed on to write the screenplay. Today, the news arrived that horror and action director Robert Rodriguez, who directed Sin City and the upcoming Predators sequel, has been offered the project by 20th Century Fox. More news on this announcement as it develops.
