Deadpool has become quiet the star as of late. Taking the spotlight of numerous Marvel comic series and video games, the Merc with a Mouth has jumped into become one of the companies most profitable characters.

However, it appears that the long awaited movie adaptation of Deadpool may have stalled in produciton permanently. According to WorstPreviews, the highly anticipated action comedy may have hit a major road block in production. Its star Ryan Reynolds has been signed on to the project since playing the title character in last summers X-men Origins: Wolverine. However, Reynolds is also playing the title role in next summers upcoming adaptation of the DC comics series Green Lantern released through Warner Bros. Today, Robert Liefeld, creator of Deadpool, announced that WB has grown hesitant on allowing Reynolds to play both characters, a decision that has never proven an issue until now. This sudden change of reaction may have stirred from the early planning for the already brewing Green Lantern sequel due out in 2012.

As reported back in June, Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Predators) was approached by Marvel and 20th Century Fox on directing the movie adaptation of the comedic mercenary Deadpool, who will be played by Ryan Reynolds.

Rodriguez let slip today to MTV that he was recently sent the early draft of the Deadpool script, written by Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The studio heads had apparently taken notice of the director following his finished work on Predators. However, Rodriguez insists that even with the studio's increased interest with him taking the role that he is still tied down with other projects including the fourth Spy Kids film and a possible Sin City sequel.

Regardless of whether he will end up directing, Rodriguez is incredibly positive about the direction the film is taking at the moment. The director claimed that the current treatment for the Merc with a Mouth was "really good". He also confirmed that Deadpool will in fact break the fourth wall and speak to the audience repeatedly throughout the movie. Rodriguez was also supportive of Ryan Reynolds, who helped to draft the script, role in the production.

Although not the best made film or the biggest financial success of the season, the science fiction horror film Predators has been considered a success by most of the team involved.

In fact, we may be seeing more the spiderlike aliens in the near future. Last night, Predators producer Robert Rodriguez announced to IGN.com that he and the studio are in fact considering a sequel. As Rodriguez put it, this year's sequel to 1980's cult classic was in many ways designed to test the water for future films in the franchise. With the profitability of future Predators films assured, Rodriguez claims that he has already begun hunting for script ideas that fit his general picture for the future of the franchise. If a sequel will in fact be made, Rodriguez will return to produce but doubts he will direct.

When it comes to science fiction horror films, the 80’s was a virtual paradise. Filled with such cult classics as Aliens and of course, Predator, these films have spawned numerous spin offs and have become pop cultural icons. While Alien continued onwards into the 90’s, Predator would stay an 80’s creature. That is until Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Spy Kids) greenlit this year’s sequel to the 80’s film. While Predators is a flawed endeavor, Rodriguez’s production is a faithful and fun edition to the franchise.

Predators follows a mostly unnamed group of individuals ranging from various nefarious global organizations (black ops, Spetsnaz, Mexican drug cartel, Yakuza, FBI’s Most Wanted) as they suddenly awake in a hazardous jungle. As it becomes dangerously clear that this is no ordinary rain forest, the unlike team must group together to defend themselves against a group of deadly calculating enemies.

In many ways Predators is faithful to the original Predator film. It manages to capture much of the spirit, tension, and character that made the original the cult classic that it is. However, despite its faithful representation of both the title character and the franchise Predators is dragged down by a mediocre and clichéd script and numerous poor directorial decisions.

The most striking and surprising aspect to Predators is how well the main cast is able to pull of their relatively meager character roles. Adrien Brody’s nose, I mean, Adrien Brody (The Pianist, King Kong), who stars as the mercenary Royce, plays his role with surprising energy and vigor, and the same can be said for the rest of the cast. While the script does not allow for well developed arcs or dialogue, each actor within the film manages to at least steer away from devolving into pure camp. Actors Laurence Fishburn (Stargate SG-1) and Alice Braga (I Am Legend) are among the stars of the film, the real standout is Topher Grace (Spider-man 3) who is a real scene stealer as the deceptive Edwin.

The action scenes in Predators are also exhilarating. Whether it’s the team trying to maneuver their way through a set of traps, fighting off alien hunting dogs, or fighting toe to toe with the Predators themselves the action is gritty, exciting, and well choreographed. However, these even feel bogged down by sometimes less than spectacular special effects and laughably clichéd directorial decisions.

In the end it is Predators poor script that holds the film down. While it’s fun and respectful to the original material, Predators is endlessly clichéd and features bland and uninteresting dialogue. While most of this saved by the outstanding cast and action sequences, there are several moments where the tired moments of the story shine through and it really puts a damper on the film as a whole.

However, despite it’s flaws Preadators really is a fun summer film. It has moments of clever humor, great acting, and plenty of thrills, even if you have to suffer through moments of pure cheese and banality.

Score: -B

If there is a Marvel character that has stolen the spotlight in recent years, it's Deadpool. The smart mouthed fourth wall breaking mercenary has jumped into public status after he was publicly raped in 2009's X-men Origins: Wolverine. Whether out of sympathy or smart marketing, Deadpool has invaded almost every major title and event in Marvel comics and spawned numerous solo series. Unsurprisingly, Deadpool has been slated for a film production since last summer.

Ryan Reynolds, who played the character in Wolverine, is slated to reprise his role. However, Marvel has insisted that this new film will not be tied to Reynold's previous appearance as the character. Zombieland writers Reese and Paul Wernick have also signed on to write the screenplay. Today, the news arrived that horror and action director Robert Rodriguez, who directed Sin City and the upcoming Predators sequel, has been offered the project by 20th Century Fox. More news on this announcement as it develops.
