It is appears that the long anticipated Spider-man reboot is finally picking up steam. With last month's casting news and villain announcements, it appears the studio heads are finally giving this project a much needed boost. This is further shown through announcements made by Sony this week regarding certain other principle roles in the film.

First, The Hollywood Reporter has announced that critically acclaimed actor Martin Sheen (West Wing, Mass Effect 2) will play the pivotal role of Uncle Ben in the upcoming reboot. Sally Ford (Forrest Gump) has also been announced to play the kind hearted Aunt May.

Perhaps more interesting then this important casting announcement was a surprise revalation released to the press today. The Wrap reported today that fan favorite and pop cultural icon Mary Jane Watson would not appear in the film. In fact she has been in the script since the first draft. Instead the film will follow Peter's first love Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone.

(Sorry for the hiatus. Things have been hectic here on the home front. While this return to posting does not mean a return to the summer schedule of daily updates, it does mean we will be posting more frequently, primarily during the weekends.)

After a long wait and months of speculation the villain for the upcoming Spider-man reboot has been revealed. It appears that after years of waiting and almost fifty years of existence in the Marvel Universe, the Lizard will finally stalk the silver screen.

The news first trickled in Monday with an announcement from Sony Pictures that prestigious actor Rhys Ifans would be playing the antagonist in the upcoming Spider-man reboot. The decision apparently came after seeing Ifans's stellar performance in the upcoming Sony film Anonymous. (Nerds will be able to see Ifans in the upcoming adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as Xenophilius Lovegood.) Ifans was also apparently chosen for his ability to convey both "warmth and rage". This left many fans speculating on who exactly the actor would be playing. Venom, Carnage, and even Kraven the Hunter were all tossed around.

According to TheWrap.com, Ifans will in fact be playing the role of Curt Connors in the 2012 comic book adaptation.

Ifans will star alongside Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.

When Andre Garfield was announced as the next Spider-man in July, the British actor was a relative unknown. While he is slowly gaining public awareness due to his role in this years drama The Social Network, Garfield may not jump onto the scene until he takes on America's favorite superhero in the summer of 2012.

In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter Garfield dropped some of the first known details about the highly anticipated reboot:
"I have been waiting for this phone call for 24 years, for someone to call me up and say, "Hey, we want you to pretend to be a character that you’ve always wanted to be all your life, and we’re going to do it with cool cameras and cool effects and you’re going to feel like you’re swinging through New York City. Do you want to do that?" [laughs] “Let me just consult with my seven-year old self and see what he thinks...” So my seven-year-old self started screaming in my soul and saying, This is what we’ve been waiting for. Like every young boy who feels stronger on the inside than they look on the outside, any skinny boy basically who wishes their muscles matched their sense of injustice, God, it’s just the stuff that dreams are made of, for sure. It’s a true f*cking honor to be part of this symbol that I actually think is a very important symbol and it’s meant a great deal to me, and it continues to mean something to people. So yeah, I feel like I’ve been preparing for it for a while. Ever since Halloween when I was four years old and I wore my first Spider-Man costume."

Garfield also revieled that shooting will begin this December.

Spider-man has conquered numerous mediums in his forty plus years of existence. Comics, novels, television series, video games, and a blockbuster movie series, Marvel's favorite web slinger will soon travel to Broadway. The musical, Spider-man: Turn off the Dark, has drifted in and out of production for years. Originally schedule for release this year, the musical was put off after several of its actors walked out due to the numerous delays. However, it appears we will in fact be sining a singing Peter Parker this Holiday season.

The Los Angeles Times reported today that the musical is currently set for a December 21. Tickets become availible in September.

Spider-man: Turn Off The Dark is diected by Julie Taymor (Across the Universe, Frida) stars Reeve Carney as Peter Parker, Patrick Page as the Green Goblin, and Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane Watson, and features music created by Bono and the Edge/

It appears that we will not be seeing Christoph Waltz fight it out with Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider-man reboot. Although this rumor was well recieved across the Internet, Superhero Hype is reporting that the Oscar winning Inglorious Basterd star will not star in the highly anticipated comic book adaptation. Looks like this truly was too good to be true.

The latest rumor buzzing around the upcoming Spider-man reboot starring Andrew Garfield has many fans excited.

According to The Playlist, Academy Award winning actor Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds) has auditoned for the role of Curt Connors, aka the Lizard. If true this would make many fans happy. Not only would we have a proven actor in a major role in the already controversial reboot, but we would see a long anticipated villain grace the screen. However, as Bleeding Cool has been quick to point out there are parts of this rumor that just don't seem to add up. The Playlist's primary source for this information was Production Weekly, a magazine that mostly focuses on providing job oppurtunities for industry professionals. Such an announcement would be strange information for them to obtain thus making this incident seem questionable. Also, there were already rumors that Waltz's Basterd co-star Michael Fassbender was up for the same role. While we now know that Fassbender turned down his role in the production in favor of playing Magneto in the upcoming X-men: First Class, it seems strange that Spider-man director Marc Webb would approach to actors from the same film for the same role.

We'll be sure to keep you posted as this story develops.

When it comes to comics and animation, there are few minds as respected as that of Paul Dini. The writer behind perhaps one of the best television series of all time Batman: The Animated Series and the award winning Arkham Asylum game, has received nearly universal acclaim from nerds and nonnerds alike. Today, Dini made thousands of more fanboys dreams come true with an announcement given to MTV. Dini will join the likes of Brian Bendis, Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly and Steven T. Seagle on the upcoming animated series Ultimate Spider-man.

The series, which is based off the highly popular comic book reboot under the same name, was announced earlier this year following the cancellation of Spectacular Spider-man. Although this decision was originally met with controversy, Dini made numerous claims to the quality and integrity of the upcoming take on Peter Parker. Reportedly the new series will be a 50% faithful adaptation of Bendis's award winning comic series, with a blend of stories original and familiar material. Dini also confirmed that changes will be made to Peter Parker's world and backstory to help fit the feel of the series and for a modern day audience: "As much as I love elements of Spider-Man's past, I don't really want to go back in and retell the Gwen Stacy and Green Goblin story in animation just so I can do my take on it. I don't want to redo the first Spider Slayer story. I don't want to redo some of those classic Lee/Romita and Lee/Ditka stories just for the sake of seeing them rendered in animation. For now, I just want to approach Spider-Man with fresh eyes, taking a few things we know about him and just doing a new spin on the concept". He also confirmed that there will in fact be guest appearances by other characters in the Marvel Universe, something that was absent in Spectacular.

Ultimate Spider-man is scheduled to air next fall with a first season of 26 episodes.

Believe it or not it has only been three years since Marvel turned the entire Spider-man fanbase on its head with their controversial One More Day storyline. This story ,which not only ended Peter Parker's 2o year marriage (in reality) but introduced a new creative team, has had a mixed reception by fans and critics alike.

However, it appears that after three years of a thrice monthly release schedule and a shifting creative team that the Brand New Day era is about to end. Whether this means that Spider-man's marriage will return is unknown, but coming next year Spidey will have a new creative team.

Despite this change in ranks, the current creative team claims that they are ending their run on the popular franchise with a bang. This September marks the start of a five part saga focusing on the chaos surrounding Lilly Hollister's goblin baby. Every villain introduced since the start of the run (including those seen in the Gauntlet redesigns) will make an appearance and will force Parker to edge to save his himself and those close to him.

The newest series set to be written solely by Spider-man veteran Dan Slott will feature several different artists (Humberto Ramos, Marcos Martin and Stefano Caselli). Slott also teased that the latest series will feature the return of several classic villains including Mac Gargan returning to his role of Scorpion (after a seven year run as the latest incarnation of Venom).

On related news, the psychotic symbiote Carnage will be returning to Marvel comics after a five year absence. Returning in a five part mini series, the symbiote will find a new host (this time a female) and will take on long time foes Spider-man and Iron Man. This series written by Zeb Wells and drawn by Clayton Craid (one of my personal favorite artists) will feature multiple symbiotes including Anti-Venom.

With Comic-con kicking into full gear, Activision has taken time to grant us with a new look at the upcoming Spider-man game. If you ask me, things are shaping up pretty nicely.

That's right folks, now you have it. The fourth and final Spider-man universe for the upcoming game has been revealed, courtesy of IGN.com. In addition to swinging through the Amazing, Noir, and 2099 universes, players will be able to hop into the highly popular Brian Bendis written spin off series Ultimate Spider-man. Unlike 2099 and Noir, the Ultimate universe is no stranger to the video game world, having a title based off it released to numerous consoles back in 2005.

The Ultimate universe is a cell shaded slick looking world that borrows much of its style from the original game based on the series. However, what sets Ultimate apart from the other Dimensions in the game is the prescence of the malevolent symbiote suit. Why Peter Parker is once again clad in his emo outfit is unknown storywise, but it adds unparalleled power to the character in combat. The Ultimate universe has already been announced to feature Deadpool, and Carnage as villains.

Check out this cool video preview, once again courtsey of IGN.com.

After several months of annoying announcements and misleading rumors, we now have a new Peter Parker for the latest adaptation of Spider-man. Here is the rather extensive press release given by Sony Pictures.

After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Today's confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.

The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.

On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, "Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."

Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said, "Spider-Man is a classic superhero -- a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker."

Producer Avi Arad added, "I'm incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future."

Producer Laura Ziskin said, "We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen."

The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Garfield is fast becoming one of the most respected and sought-after young actors working in the industry today. In a short career, spanning only five years, he has already been directed by, and starred alongside, some of the greatest names and received a BAFTA for a role that won him international praise.

Garfield most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film The Social Network. He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story I'm Here, which premiered at Sundance this year. He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.

Other notable screen credits include Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus playing opposite Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and the late Heath Ledger, Robert Redford’s Lions For Lambs, where he starred alongside Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; Revolution Films' "Red Riding Trilogy – 1974" directed by Julian Jarrold, where he lead a stellar cast including Rebecca Hall and David Morrissey, and his unforgettable portrayal of a young ex-con in John Crowley's "Boy A," for which he earned the best actor BAFTA in 2008.

Garfield’s career began in theatre and in 2006 his performances in "Beautiful Thing" (Sound Space/Kit Productions), "The Overwhelming," and "Burn / Chatroom / Citizenship" (Royal National Theatre) won him the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard awards and the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards. Other notable theatre credits include "Romeo and Juliet" (Manchester Royal Exchange) and "Kes" (Manchester Royal Exchange), for which he received the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Manchester Evening News Awards 2004.

There are few more respected directors in nerd culture then Sam Raimi. Creator of the Evil Dead series and the Spider-man films, Raimi announced last summer that he will be working on adaptation of the popular Warcraft video game series. During the Saturn Awards this week, Raimi was interviewed by Collider.com addressing rumors regarding his involvement in The Hobbit film and about the status of Warcraft.

The next X-Men film, First Class, is moving further into production. With filimng to begin in August, Kick Ass director Matthew Vaughn has been on the hunt to cast the roles for the numerous characters appearing in the prequel. Both Aaron Johnson ( Kick Ass) and Andrew Garfield (Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus) have reportedly read for roles, and this week further casting rumors have surfaced.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Michael Fassbender has now signed on for the role of Magneto, turning down offers to play the villain in the upcoming Spider-man film. (Does this shoot down rumors of the Lizar's involvement? No idea).

Also Showbiz 411 claims that Benjamin Walker, most notable for his role in Flags of Our Fathers, will play the role of Hank McCoy, more commonly known as Beast.

Sam Raimi, director of the Evil Dead and Spider-man films, may have traded one fantasy realm for another. Last year the famous director announced that he would direct a film based on the popular Warcraft video game franchise. Of course, this had geeks across the world ecstatic. When Raimi stepped down from creating the next film in the Spider-man series, Warcraft seemed closer then ever before.

However, the announcement came yesterday that it may be a while before the world of Azeroth is adapted to the silver screen. According to Vulture, Sam Raimi was approached by Disney to direct a prequel to the Wizard of Oz, focusing on the mysterious title figure. The film, titled Oz, The Great and Powerful has been Disney's pet project for years and has bounced between multiple directors. Chances are that if Raimi picks up this project it may take priority and thus bump back other projects, including Warcraft.

Earlier this week we reported that Inglorious Basterd star Michael Fassbender is rumored to play the antagonist in the upcoming Spider-man reboot. While there are numerous rumors swirling around the Internet regarding the identity of Spider-man's newest nemesis, the same source which leaked Fassbender's name to Showbiz 411 is claiming that the critically acclaimed actor will be playing Curt Connors, also known as the animalistic Lizard. Spider-man fans have waited years for the sadistic reptile to grace the silver screen. Curt Connors has appeared without his scaly counterpart in two of the previous films, leading to speculation before its cancellation that the Lizard would appear in Spider-man 4.

As revealed earlier, video game developer Activision is going all out into trying to make their latest attempt at a Spider-man video game appealing to the characters wide fanbase and to the general public. This year's attempt Shattered Dimensions follows several different universes and incarnations of the character becoming itnerlocked into one cohesive story. So far, Activision has revealed the standard Amazing universe along with the grittier Scarface-esque Noir universe. Yesterday, they revealed the game's latest world, 2099.

In many ways 2099 is the cult movie of the Marvel universe. Started as a rather unsucessful experiment in the early 90's, 2099 followed Spider-man and other Marvel heroes in a highly stylized and colorful futuristic setting. The 2099 run soon faded into obscurity, but a rather loyal fanbase has kept the limited series popular. The inclusion of this lesser known world shows the dedication Activision has put into this game.

Actor Michael Fassbender may be playing the villain for two of Marvel's upcoming superhero adaptations. According to showbiz411.com, the critically acclaimed actor, most known for his roles in 300, Inglorious Basterds, and the upcoming DC comics adaptation Jonah Hex, has reportedly signed on to play a younger version of Magento in X-men: First Class. To make things even more interesting, the site also reports that Fassbender was approached to play the villain in 2012's reboot of Spider-man. This announcement brings no further news over who the famous webslinger may face off against, but speculation places Fassbender as portraying the villainous Norman Osborn, a.k.a The Green Goblin.

Ever since Sony Pictures dropped the bombshell in January of this year that they will rebooting the Spider-man franchise, the search for a replacement actor has been on. We have seen names ranging from Zach Efron to Robert Pattinson, but according to Bleedingcool.com we may have a new actor already lined up for the web slingers latest outing.

Jaimie Bell, who is best known for his roles in the newest King Kong and Jumper, will reportedly play the title character in Sony's 2012 Spider-man reboot. Bell appeared on a shortlist of possible leads released by Sony last month, which adds credibility to this rumor. Bell also is signed on for Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg's Tintin films.
